Rules & Regulations
Pere Marquette State Park welcomes dogs on a leash, keeps bikes on the paved bike trail, and asks groups of 20 or more to get written permission in advance, according to IDNR. Hiking trails are open sunup to sundown, firewood must come from Jersey County, and rock climbing is allowed only in the designated area.
The Main Rules at a Glance
Dogs
IDNR allows dogs in the park, in the campgrounds and on the trails. Keep them on a leash at all times and pick up and remove their waste. Dogs are not allowed inside the campground Rent-A-Cabins.
Bikes and Horses
- Bikes: only on the paved Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail. IDNR says it is illegal to have a bike on the hiking trails.
- Horses: on the equestrian trails off Graham Hollow Road, never on the bike trail. See horseback riding.
- ATVs: prohibited on all state-owned or state-run land.
Trail Hours
Hiking trails are open from sunup to sundown.
Camping and Firewood
- Do not bring firewood from outside Jersey County, Illinois. Campground hosts sell it.
- Book Class A sites through ExploreMoreIL; Class B sites are first come, first served. See camping.
Groups
- IDNR requires advance written permission from the site superintendent for any group of 20 or more. The park page also asks groups of 25 or more to register ahead.
- Non-traditional uses, such as a family reunion in a picnic area, need an activity permit requested at least 21 days ahead.
- At least one adult must accompany each group of 15 minors.
Rock Climbing
Climbing and rappelling are allowed only in the designated climbing area. Most routes are bolted sport routes. See plan your visit.
Hunting Areas
The public hunting areas on Graham Hollow Road and at Copperhead Hollow (1,344 acres) need a free permit from the Visitor Center, and statewide seasons apply. Squirrel season in the park opens the day after Labor Day.
Before You Go
IDNR asks visitors to call the park office before a trip, because nature can close roads and facilities: (618) 786-3323. Its parting request: take only memories, leave only footprints.
